Quarterback Tyler Finnes passed for 200 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another 85 and scored three touchdowns Sept. 2 in a 41-26 opening Northwest Suburban Conference win over Centennial.

Andover fell behind the defending conference champion Centennial early, but shortly after took advantage of a pair of Centennial turnovers to turn the game in its favor.

First, there was a pass interception midway through the opening quarter that set up the Huskies’ offense near midfield. Moments after turnover, Finnes connected with Marc Lorimer for nine yards and a tying touchdown.

A Centennial fumble right at the end of the first quarter put the Andover offense back in business at the 48-yard line. The senior quarterback responded like a shark, going for the kill in swift fashion.

Finnes scrambled to the 19, then added a couple of runs that put the ball at the 9-yard line. Ultimately, Fines went over from the 1-yard line and with a successful Cole Westerlund extra point kick, Andover had a 13-6 lead.

Centennial pared the seven-point deficit to one with another long touchdown pass play, but missed the tying extra point kick. Not fazed, Andover countered with a Finnes-engineered 62-yard touchdown drive.

The Huskies quarterback initially completed key passes to Charlie Taylor and Patrick O’Donnell that put Andover just inside the 10, then two players later rifled a pass to Matt Schwarz a step inside the end zone for the touchdown and a 20-12 advantage.

Finnes, who was smoking on that drive was literally on fire the next time he got his hands on the ball with less than two minutes to play in the first half at his own 21. This time he decisively directed Andover back into Centennial’s end of the field as the time ticked down toward the halftime break, then came  up with his most dramatic play of the game as the scoreboard clock hit 0:00.

With the ball in his hands and moving a little to his right, Finnes launched a pass to the end zone where receiver John Wagner made the catch for the Huskies’ fifth touchdown and 27-12 lead.

In the second half, Andover settled the issue early with a 69-yard touchdown drive that Finnes capped with a 12-yard touchdown run for a 34-12 lead. Centennial came back to make it 34-20 early in the fourth quarter, then scored another touchdown late in the game. In between, though, Finnes completed his night with another 1-yard touchdown run and Andover completed its Week 1 assignment with a 41-26 win.
